ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

With much regret, Larry has made the decision to discontinue his teaching activities due to personal reasons. However, you may read about his background on this page if you wish.

West Coast Swing and Two-Step instructor LARRY TARR studies privately and frequently attends workshops presented by master level teachers from all parts of the country. He has received instruction from Mario Robau, Ken Roesel, Donna Roesel, Angel Figueroa, Robert Cordoba, John Festa, Bill Cameron, John Lindo, Gary Jobst, Resa Henderson, Barry Durand, Beata Howe, Philip LaMothe, Lynne Stevens, John Finley, and Paul Watson.  He is also studying international style Waltz and Cha-Cha from Ballroom instructor Martin Kunc.

Larry's dance technique combines precise footwork with a lead that is definite, well-defined, and easy to follow while being very gentle on the follower. It is this kind of lead-and-follow sensitivity which Larry absorbed from his teachers, and he in turn strives to convey it to his students.

He has competed at national events in Boston, New York, New Jersey, Washington DC, and Connecticut. He always makes it a point to attend the numerous dance workshops presented at these events, thereby furthering his own dancing and teaching skills while staying up-to-date with the latest revisions in West Coast Swing technique.

Larry was born and raised in Philadelphia, and had quite a musical background before starting his career in the dance world.  As a teenager in the early 1970´s, he played keyboards with a band and later trained as a concert pianist while a student at Temple University.  He became especially fond of playing with other musicians in musical ensembles of all sizes, developing the ability to lead and follow others solely through the subtle motions of body language. After college, Larry set aside his aspirations on the concert stage in favor of a more secure career in the field of computers.  His previous musical background as a performer and teacher, coupled with the everyday attention to detail required for computer work, have provided Larry with valuable tools for sharpening his abilities as both a dancer and an instructor.

Larry´s preference for country living led him in 1983 to buy a small farm in East Greenville, PA, where he still resides, about twenty minutes south of Allentown. He is employed as an Application Developer of computer software at a major insurance company in his area.
